The group of hard working site members at the facebook page “At Slieve Gullion’s Foot” have shared this great story of The Beatles stopping at Carrickarnon in 1963.
A site member has sent in this still shot from a video which shows them at Carrickarnon with Faughil Mountain in the background.
The full clip of this ‘interview’ is available on youtube and the part in question starts at 3 minutes 43 seconds.
“The Beatles concert the night before in Dublin almost caused a riot. The fans went crazy, stayed outside their hotel all night and of course, other residents complained. They were due to give a press conference in Belfast the next morning. The hotel arranged to have them taken from the hotel in a van belonging to one of the Dublin papers. Everything went OK. They had a very uncomfortable journey to the border but it was for their own safety.
When they arrived at Carrickarnon, the van driver could not cross the border because he didn’t have a book to get stamped, so he more or less dumped them there.
One man, the eminent Newry reporter Frank Hall, was privy to some information and was there to rescue them, or keep them company until a car arrived to take them to Belfast.
Frank got the first interview and dined out on the story for many years.”
