This derelict house at Newtownhamilton Co. Armagh, reminded me of my own house when
growing up. Our old iron gate was similar with its paint peeling and had the very same ornate
design. The front door is weathered yet still welcoming, almost beckoning the viewer with its
knocker taking central stage in the painting. Despite the windows being boarded up and the roof
overgrown the vibe of this picture is joyful, mostly due to the abundance of warm red tones. I
spent time building up the various textures in this painting using a palette knife and stippling
parts like the dashed walls.
Artist Sharon Donnelly along with her Wood Turner husband Padraig Carragher, work out of their studio in Mullaghbawn. The studio and gallery is a recently restored farm building catered to facilitate a wide range of artist lead workshops. It is situated in the middle of the picturesque Ring of Gullion, only nine mile from Newry city and seven mile from Dundalk, Co.Louth.
