Protect Slieve Gullion Cairn

The Restore Slieve Gullion Cairn project is implemented through The Ring of Gullion Landscape Partnership Scheme. The LPS is part of the Heritage Lottery Fund’s programme to conserve and enhance some of the region’s most treasured landscapes. The LPS runs from September 2015 until August 2018.

The total budget for this project is £6,295

This project aims to restore aspects and conserve one of the country’s most important built heritage sites. The tombs passage will be re-profiled to its original shape, graffiti will be removed, the chamber restored in line with the recommendations from the initial survey document, available from the download below.

Project Updates

Passage grave gets a second face lift

Update published on: September 30, 2017

A diverse band of volunteers, once again, made the climb to the top of Slieve Gullion to carry out repair work to the passage grave. We weren’t TV famous this time, but we did carry out much needed work. Under the supervision of an NIEA archaeologist we removed stones from the chamber floor, lowering and levelling it, as well as cleared many of the stones from the entrance passage way. All the stones were reallocated up the sides to repair the new scars that were forming and to cover exposed concrete on the summit of the cairn.

Our final task was dismantling and rearranging stones that had been built up to make a wind break on top of the cairn. All in all a rewarding day.
