Slieve Gullion Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Stakeholder Consultation

The Slieve Gullion Special Area of Conservation (SAC) lies at the heart of Ring of Gullion AONB and the Mourne Gullion Strangford Aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark. It is a protected landscape of European importance as a striking example of a ring dyke formation.

Like all scenic areas, there are opportunities for tourism and recreation, while traditional farming is required to maintain the internationally important peatland habitats. The area has both high scenic and biodiversity interest and is used in a variety of ways which have implications for the management of the habitat.

An SAC Management Plan has been drafted and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in progressing the implementation of the plan is keen to seek views from a wide range of stakeholders.  The Council is working with Farfield Ecology to gather opinions and thoughts on three aspects by 18 December 2020.

  1. What is your relationship with the SAC?
  2. Can you describe your vision for the successful and positive management for Slieve Gullion SAC.
  3. Are there any current activities that may impact the vision?
