Ring of Gullion Wildfire Project

The Ring of Gullion AONB project is working with Enspire and Tommakesmusic to create an action packed wildfire awareness campaign.  The campaign is funded by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency and Newry and Mourne District Council, it will raise awareness of the risks of wildfires in the Ring of Gullion area.

Enspire and Tommakesmusic have created an interactive workshop for primary schools to highlight the dangers and causes of wildfires. The P6 school children in St Malachy’s Primary School, Camlough and St Mary’s Primary School, Mullaghbawn are working with the campaign to develop ideas for a 3-5 min video. The video will be used on the Ring of Gullion website as an educational tool.

Tom Watson from Tommakesmusic states “I am looking forward to working with the schools to get their ideas for the video. We will then pick the top 3 ideas and make them a reality. “Wildfires can be a big risk to areas such as the Ring of Gullion as they often spread quickly through plants that are dry and easy to burn such as gorse and heather.

Watch out for the video on the Ring of Gullion website over the coming months. If you have any photos or videos of past wildfires in the Ring of Gullion, which you would like to share, please email them to [email protected] or contact the office on 028 3086 1949.
