Exciting times At Slieve Gullion – life-size Red Squirrel Spotted!

There was great excitement at Slieve Gullion Forest Park on Saturday 5th October with the first sightings of a life size Red Squirrel in the Ring of Gullion Area. The Red Squirrel is the newest addition to the INTERREG IVA -funded Action for Biodiversity project.

As part of National Red Squirrel Week, the Ring of Gullion Red Squirrel Group joined forces with the Ring of Gullion team, the INTERREG IVA -funded Action for Biodiversity project, and the Biodiversity Officer for Newry and Mourne District Council to raise awareness of Red Squirrels in the Ring of Gullion area.

Funding pours in for Sticky Fingers event

"We have also recently secured a further £259,000 from the Northern Ireland Tourist Board for a Living Storybook project at Slieve Gullion. The Giants’ Lair project which is being devised with Newry and Mourne District Council will see the first children’s interactive arts play space devised to take children through an imaginative adventure inspired by local myths and legends,” added the CEO.

Red Squirrel Celebration at Slieve Gullion

Red Squirrel Family Day

To celebrate Red Squirrel Week, Newry and Mourne District Council have teamed up with the Ring of Gullion Red Squirrel Group to offer a wild day out for all at Slieve Gullion Forest Park on Saturday 5th October from 11.00am-2.00pm. Come along to this free event to learn more about our furry native red squirrels and autumn in the park and if your lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of one!

Another Mothtastic night Tiger hunting!!

Families came from as far as the Cooley mountains to learn more about Butterflies and Moths in their gardens at the Ring of Gullion Event on Thursday 8th August in Jonesborough’s Pastoral Centre. And they weren’t disappointed with the elusive Garden Tiger moth, the colourful rainbow-like Mother of Pearl Moth and even a moth that looked very much like bird poo! found as part of the night’s adventures!

There was a fantastic turn out on Wednesday 24th July which saw the last of the open community consultations for the Ring of Gullion Landscape Partnership Scheme. The final consultation was themed around industrial heritage. On the night people got to feel the quality of the linen that was produced in Bessbrook. They also got to see pictures of workers from the mill as well as talk to former mill workers.
