CúChulainn is one of the most famous Irish mythological heroes. He appears in the stories of the Ulster Cycle, and Scottish and Manx folklore, but how much of the story of his life do you know or remember? Join the Ring of Gullion team and local man Reamonn Ó Ciaráin in Crossmaglen Library as he tells the story of the great warrior Cúchulainn on Wednesday 8th November at 7.00pm in Crossmaglen Library.

Newry Mourne and Down District Council and the Ring of Gullion Partnership kicked off their Winter Solstice Festival on Wednesday 1st November, traditionally known as Samhain. The festival started with a coach tour with Una Walsh highlighting the Celtic footprints in the area. In Celtic Ireland, about 2,000 years ago, Samhain was the division of the year between the lighter half (summer) and the darker half (winter).

Non profit organisations can apply to the Association for grants of up to €30,000 to implement a conservation project. Projects must protect a threatened species or habitat AND have a link to the outdoor user. All projects MUST involve hands-on conservation work.

Earlier this year, in collaboration with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and the Ring of Gullion Landscape Partnership, the Trekker Loan Program captured some of the wild and picturesque locations in the Ring of Gullion. The images were captured using Google’s Trekker camera and have opened remote and often hard-to-reach places, to armchair-explorers, travellers and history enthusiasts alike.

The course will give participants an insight into all aspects of traditional woodland and hedgerow management from growing your own, through to managing mature ones and the products you can get from them.

The Ring of Gullion Project has teamed up with Jen Lynch (a licensed bird ringer with the BTO) who will provide a demonstration on Sunday 15th October of bird ringing, a process where a uniquely numbered lightweight metal ring is placed on a birds leg’s. Come along to this free event to learn more about the birds in Slieve Gullion Forest Park.

The Bessbrook model village living history archive has now been completed. This fantastic project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and the culmination of the programme that captured the hearts and minds of the village, was a well-attended celebration event held in Bessbrook Town Hall in October.
