Tree-mendous tree give-away greens South Armagh

Over 14km of hedgerows and 11,000 saplings were given away at Slieve Gullion on Saturday 20th February, to farmers, householders and community groups. The crisp winter’s day saw the culmination of the Gullion’s Green Woodland Scheme, which is being run by Ring of Gullion Landscape Partnership together with the Million Trees in a Day project and the Woodland Trust. More than 20 volunteers helped to organise the mass tree give-away and loaded trees into everything from bicycle carriers to tractors.

The Ring of Gullion Landscape Partnership, with Pauline Loughran, ran two workshops in February for sixteen enthusiastic participants to develop knowledge, skills and understanding in how to trace family trees and find out who our ancestors are. Participants examined a Crossmaglen family from the 1790’s and used this to see how to join the dots with any family.

Ring of Gullion secures additional funding to combat wildfires

Durkan announces £125,600 boost for natural environment

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan today announced an additional £125,600 to protect our landscape, habitats and species.

Ten not for profit organisations and councils will share a slice of the Natural Environment Fund for varied projects ranging from raptor studies for our birds of prey to wildfire initiatives.

Over 40 organisations unite for a brighter future for woods and trees

The Woodland Trust is leading 47 cross-sector organisations* from across the UK in a call to celebrate, and secure the future of, our trees and woodland by creating a Charter for Trees, Woods and People. Our country’s woods and trees are facing unprecedented pressures from development, disease and climate change. They risk being neglected, undervalued and forgotten.

Farmland Bird Count 2016- what will you find on your land?

The GWCT Big Farmland Bird Count 2016 is happening from the 6th to the 14th of February and the Ring of Gullion Team is delighted to support this fantastic initiative. The team is urging farmers and volunteers to take part. Farmers just need to spend 30 minutes on any one day between the 6th and 14th February recording the species and number of birds seen on one particular area of the farm.
