Spring is a time of year traditionally associated with cleaning. With more of us visiting beauty spots the amount of litter in some places has been increasing. In south Armagh, a new community initiative hopes to tidy up some of the main attractions in the Ring of Gullion.
Well done to all the community groups who have already got out to tidy their area for Tidy Ring of Gullion Week in April.
Des Murphy, chairperson of the Ring of Gullion Partnership worked with local communities to organise the clean-up initiative.
“Whilst the upside to the Covid pandemic is that many are venturing back out into the countryside and walking, cycling, and getting in touch with nature and their beautiful surrounds,” he said.
“The sad, but obvious downside is that many are treating the countryside as a dustbin and this is having a very detrimental effect on both wildlife and our area of outstanding natural beauty.”
In partnership with the NISA Complex in Camloch, a ‘Best Kept Village in the Ring of Gullion’ competition will be launched in the coming weeks, and will run until September.
