Winter Solstice Festival – Cairn Illumination Hikes 2016

rog-winter-solstice-logo-largeSiúlóid Treoraithe ar Ghrianstad an Gheimhridh Féile Ghrianstad an Gheimhridh – Siúlóid go Tí na Caillí Béarra

Ní mór áit a chur in áirithe mar go mbíonn éileamh mór ar an tSiúlóid seo.

Is é an tuama pasáiste ar bharr Shliabh gCuillinn an ceann is airde in Éirinn. Tugtar Tí na Caillí Béarra air sna bólaí seo. Gach bliain le linn Ghrianstad an Gheimhridh, lasann solas luí na gréine an seomra taobh istigh den tuama pasáiste. Tógadh séadchomhartha na Clochaoise úire seo am éigin idir 4,000RC agus 2,500RC, timpeall is 6,000 bliain ó shin de réir dealraimh. Fágann sé sin go bhfuil sé 3,000 bliain níos sine ná an Phirimid Mhór i nGiza san Éigipt agus chóir a bheith 4,000 bliain níos aosta ná Stonehenge Shasana! Nó ar an chomhaois leo ar a laghad…

Le linn Ghrianstad an Gheimhridh bíonn pasáiste cúng an tuama, sa charn theas, i líne dhíreach le conair na gréine. Is iontach an dóigh a shoilsíonn an ghrian an pasáiste féin agus cúl an tseomra ag luí na gréine. Beidh cúig chinn de shiúlóidí treoirithe go mullach Shliabh gCuillinn á n-eagrú againn ar 18ú, 19ú, 20ú, 21ú agus 22ú Nollaig 2016. Is é Seán Mac Diarmada a bheas ann Déardaoin 22ú Nollaig 2016 chun siúlóid i nGaeilge ar Ghrianstad an Gheimhridh a threorú.

Tabhair faoi deara go mbeidh sé fíor-thábhachtach éadaí cuí agus buataisí láidre a chaitheamh amuigh ar fhairsinge an tsléibhe sa dúluachair. Is minic a bhíonn cosáin shléibhe sleamhain go leor agus iad fliuch báite agus thig leat a bheith cinnte go mbeidh fuireach fada feanntach romhainn fosta. Moltar tóirse a thabhairt leat cionn is go mbeidh muid ag teacht anuas le coineascar, tóirse cinn an rud is fóirsteanaí sa dóigh is go mbeidh an dá lámh saor agat i gcás timpiste. Ní bheidh an tsiúlóid seo oiriúnach ach do shiúlóirí a bhfuil taithí fairsinge acu cheana féin ar chúrsaí cnocadóireachta.

Cionn is go mbíonn na siúlóidí ag brath ar an aimsir cuirfear ar ceal iad i gcás na drochaimsire.

Ní féidir linn gealladh go ligfear daoine isteach don tuama pasáiste.

Booking is essential as places are limited.

Set on the summit of Slieve Gullion is the highest surviving passage tomb in Ireland.  It is known locally as ‘the Calliagh Berra’s House’.  Every year on the winter solstice the setting sun illuminates the chamber inside.  The Neolithic or New Stone Age monument dates to between 4000 B.C. and 2500 B.C., making it up to 6000 years old.  That could be 3000 years older than the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt and nearly 4000 years older than England’s Stonehenge!  Or as old as them anyway…

The tomb is aligned to the setting sun at the winter solstice.  It is breathtaking when the sun finally hits the back of the chamber and it is amazing just how bright it gets.  We will be taking five guided walks on the 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd December. The Gap o’ the North Hill Walking Club will be managing the walks.  The Gap o’ the North Hill Walking Club will be managing the walks. We will have special guest Dermot Somers leading the walk on the 21st December. The walk on the 22nd December will be in Irish, led by Seán Mac Diarmada.

Please note that this is a winter hill walk so it is essential to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear.  The path can be slippery when wet and there will be some waiting around in the cold.  As it is dusk when we descend torches are recommended, ideally head torches to keep your hands free for balance.  It is also recommend that you have experience of hill walking before attending this hike.

The walks are weather dependent and will be cancelled in extreme weather. You can check before leaving by calling Alison on Mobile: +44 (0) 77 3062 1215.  We cannot guarantee entry into the Passage tomb.
