Winter Solstice Festival– Cairn Hikes 2019

Winter Solstice Festival– Cairn Hikes 2019

English follows below.

Féile Ghrianstad an Gheimhridh – Siúlóid Treoraithe go Tí na Caillí Béarra

Ní mór d’áit a chur in áirithe mar go mbíonn éileamh mór ar an Siúlóid seo.

Is é an tuama pasáiste ar bharr Shliabh gCuillinn an ceann is airde, atá fós ann, in Éirinn. Tugtar Tí na Caillí Béarra air sna bólaí seo. Gach bliain le linn Ghrianstad an Gheimhridh, lasann solas luí na gréine an seomra taobh istigh den tuama pasáiste. Tógadh séadchomhartha na Clochaoise úire seo am éigin idir 4,000RC agus 2,500RC, thart ar 6,000 bliain ó shin de réir dealraimh. Fágann sé sin go bhfuil sé 3,000 bliain níos sine ná an Phirimid Mhór i nGiza san Éigipt agus chóir a bheith 4,000 bliain níos aosta ná Stonehenge Shasana! Nó ar an chomhaois leo ar a laghad…

Le linn Ghrianstad an Gheimhridh bíonn pasáiste cúng an tuama, i líne dhíreach le conair na gréine. Is iontach an dóigh a shoilsíonn an ghrian an pasáiste féin agus cúl an tseomra ag luí na gréine. Beidh cúig chinn de shiúlóidí treoirithe go mullach Shliabh gCuillinn á n-eagrú againn ar 18ú agus 19ú Nollaig 2019. Beidh Cumann Cnocadóireachta Bhearna Uladh ag bainistiú na siúlóidí.

Tabhair faoi deara go mbeidh sé fíor-thábhachtach éadaí cuí agus buataisí láidre a chaitheamh amuigh ar fhairsinge an tsléibhe sa dúluachair. Ní ghá duit na faisean is deireanaí a chaitheamh, ach is gá go dtabharfadh sé cosaint duit in aghaidh na haimsire agus na gaoithe. Ba chóir go gcoimeádfadh an bunéide tirim agus te thú. Roghnaigh éadaí olann atá teann go leor. Tugann an chéad sraith eile insliú agus glacann sé an maothas amach ón chorp. Is féidir seo a bheith déanta as olann nó lomra. Tugann an éide seactrach cosaint in aghaidh na gaoithe agus na taise. Má shíleann treoraí na siúlóide nach bhfuil tú féin, nó duine atá leat gléasta go hoiriúnach, ní cheadófar duit/daoibh dul ar an siúlóid. Ní ligfear ach daoine atá cláraithe don siúlóid, dul ar an siúlóid.

Cionn is go mbíonn na siúlóidí ag brath ar an aimsir cuirfear ar ceal iad i gcás na drochaimsire. Is féidir glaoch a chur ar 028 308 28590 le seiceáil roimh ré. Ní féidir linn gealladh go ligfear daoine isteach don tuama pasáiste.

Winter Solstice Festival– Guided Walks to the Calliagh Berra’s House

Booking is required as there is great demand for this Walk.

Set on the summit of Slieve Gullion is the highest surviving passage tomb in Ireland. It is known locally as ‘the Calliagh Berra’s House’. Every year on the winter solstice the setting sun illuminates the chamber inside. The Neolithic, or New Stone Age, monument dates to between 4000 BC and 2500 BC, making it up to 6000 years old. That could be 3000 years older than the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt and nearly 4000 years older than England’s Stonehenge! Or as old as them anyway…

The tomb is aligned to the setting sun at the winter solstice. It is breathtaking when the sun finally hits the back of the chamber and it is amazing just how bright it gets. We will be taking four guided walks on the 18th and 19th. The Gap o’ the North Hill Walking Club will be managing the walks.

Please note that this is a winter hill walk so it is essential to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. It does not have to be the latest fashion, but it should protect you against weather and wind. The innermost layer should keep the skin dry and provide insulation. Choose wool garments that fits snugly. The intermediate layer provides insulation and transport moisture away from the body. They may be made of wool or fleece. The outer garments must provide wind and moisture protection. If the Walk Leaders feel you/ anyone in your party are not dressed appropriately, you/they will not be allowed on the walk. Only attendees booked on the hike will be allowed to take part in the hike.

The path can be slippery when wet and there will be some waiting around in the cold. As it is dusk when we descend, torches are recommended; ideally head torches to keep your hands free for balance. It is also recommended that you have experience of hill walking before attending this hike. Children must be 12 or over and must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

The walks are weather dependent and will be cancelled in extreme weather. You can check before leaving by calling 028 308 28590. We cannot guarantee entry into the Passage tomb.
