Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has recently completed a Tourism Strategy for the District. A key recommendation from the Strategy is the development of two themed Visitor Experience Plans – one for the Mourne and Ring of Gullion Experience and one for the Mourne Coastal Experience (Strangford Lough to Carlingford Lough including St. Patrick). These Plans will play a critical role in creating ‘EPIC’ visitor experiences, unifying the overall destination Experience, and assisting business operators to deliver world-class memorable ‘EPIC moments’.
Visitor Experience Plans
The Visitor Experience Plans seek to bring the concept of ‘EPIC’ to life, providing a framework for a new approach to working together and delivering tourism experiences that are
- Experiential
- Personalised
- Iconic and Immersive
- Creative
The planning process will provide an opportunity to work with agencies, NMDDC staff, and business operators to develop new experiences and strengthen existing product in a way that is aligned with market expectations and the destination’s underlying focus on ‘mountains, myths and maritime’.
The preparation of the Experience Development Plans will involve important decisions and developments which have the potential to make a positive contribution not only to tourism, but to the wider economic development in the District. Through attracting new markets, and increasing both dwell time and daily spend, these plans will assist in job creation and in spreading the benefits of tourism across the District, while at the same time recognising the need to protect the special environmental character of Newry, Mourne and Down.
