Michael J. Murphy Winter School

Once again the Ring of Gullion Landscape Partnership has teamed up with Ti Chulainn and to deliver another exciting Michael J. Murphy Winter School. The theme of this year’s Winter School is ‘The Independent Mind’. This is to pay homage to Michael J. Murphy, the celebrated folklorist, writer, photographer, broadcaster and socialist republican, as probably the most independent mind ever to come out of South Armagh.

Itinerary:

Friday 18th November
7.30pm:  Fr Peter McVerry SJ, Ireland’s foremost independent thinker, has worked as a priest in the inner city of Dublin, where he worked hard to help the homeless and founded the Peter McVerry Trust.  He has written on many issues relating to young homeless people, such as accommodation, drugs, juvenile justice, the gardai, the prisons and education.
Admission: £5 (refreshments served)

Saturday 19th November – All day concession £8
11am: Niall Murphy, All-Ireland Champion musician from the Camlough area, will speak about his decision to follow a career in music.
Admission: £5

12pm: Carricknagavna School Reunion DVD launch

1pm – 2pm: Lunch

2pm: The Power of the Independent Mind forum with guest speakers Brian Feeney, Patrick Murphy and Fionnuala O’Connor, who will give individual contributions and then take part in the forum.
Admission: £5

The winner of The Michael J. Murphy Short Story Competition will be announced.  The competition is open to all over-18s and the closing date for receipt of entries is November 1st.  Please post hard copies of entries (with your name, address and contact telephone number) to: The Secretary, Cuimhneamh, Ti Chulainn, Maphoner, Mullaghbane, Newry, Co.Armagh.
