Lúnasa Festival: Fleadh Rua

Fleadh Rua is a festival-gathering , celebrating the existence of the unique Red-head gene, in an atmosphere of traditional Irish music and culture.

Calling all red heads and lovers of red heads; come and check out the Forkhill Fleadh Rua, the only red head festival in Ulster.  The Fleadh Rua festival is in its second year and going from strength to strength.   It is a great opportunity to meet fellow red heads, celebrate all things red, especially the red hair gene and have a bit of craic.  There will be lots to see and do:-

12pm – 4pm: Family fun day activities.  Join us for family friendly red themed fun and games.  There will be face-painting, craft activities with Jumping Clay, badge making, a Big Butterfly count and a range of market stalls.

Why not watch our puppet show, which tells the story of how the grey squirrels came to Ireland and put our lovely red squirrels at risk.  The show will be running at 1pm and 3pm.

We’ll also be running red-themed competitions such as:

  • Carrot Toss – Who can throw a carrot the furthest?
  • Dunk the Ginger Nut – Who can dunk a ginger nut biscuit in tea for the longest time without it breaking?
  • Ginger Quiz – Test your knowledge of famous ginger people, characters and animals?
  • Ginger Competition – Who has the longest red hair?  Who has the longest red beard?
  • A Mystery Race

If after all that, you need a rest and a sit down there will be a café running in the community centre; all the proceeds of which, will be donated to PIPS.

3pm – 6pm: Traditional Music Session.  Join local musicians in the Welcome Inn for a lively music session with large helpings of craic.

9pm – late: Fleadh Rua Céilí – Featuring Bothán.  Get your dancing shoes on and dance the night away at the céilí in the Welcome Inn.  Bothán will keep you entertained and in time with their lively music and a caller will keep you on the right track, as you wheel and gallop the night away.  Céilí tickets: £5
