Solstice literally means ‘light standing still’.
This immersive retreat experience is the perfect chance to stop and connect with one of Ireland’s most ancient sacred sites, which was designed especially for the Winter Solstice.
We will begin this special experience in a cosy World War II Nissen hut, a time for personal reflection and space to develop goals and affirmations for the year ahead, with Ring of Gullion Ambassador and Meditation Coach, Ann Ward. After a nurturing lunch we will join Ambassador and Guide Gary Martin who will guide us up the ascent to the South Cairn on Slieve Gullion, to the Stone Age burial chamber; built approximately 6,000 years ago. Please note: We’ll be beginning the hike from the top car park on the forest drive.
We will rest inside the cairn with foraged, mulled elderberry cordial and home-made shortbread. As the sun sets, Ann will support you to connect with the sacred Winter Solstice light through a guided meditation.
Special notes for guests
This is a winter hill walk so it is essential to wear lots of layers, bring waterproofs, hat, scarf, gloves and walking boots. The path can be slippery when wet and there will be some waiting around in the cold inside the cairn. As it is dusk when we descend torches are recommended, ideally head torches to keep your hands free for balance. It is also recommend that you have experience of hill walking before attending this hike and please bring walking poles if you have them.
The walks are weather dependent and will be cancelled in extreme weather. You can check before leaving by calling Ann +4478 1683 5147.
We cannot guarantee entry into the Passage tomb if there are adverse conditions.
