European Heritage Open Days- Celebrating the life of a Nissen hut

This is an opportunity for the local community and visitors to explore this quirky second world war Nissen hut in Meigh village and to meet Local Ring of Gullion Ambassador Ann Ward who will showcase its history from its origins on Greencastle Air-force base to its contemporary use as a peaceful healing space. The evening will include an interactive talk about the history of the hut by Joe Boden who was 10 when the American soldiers arrived to the airforce base in 1942. This will be followed by music with Colleen Savage and friends and includes refreshments. Donations in aid of Southern Area Hospice Service.

This is an opportunity for the local community and visitors to explore this quirky Second World War Nissen hut in Meigh village (Designed during the First World War by the engineer and inventor Major Peter Norman).

Local Ring of Gullion Ambassador, Ann Ward, will showcase its history from its origins on Greencastle Air Force Base to its contemporary use. Her vision is to transform this hut, that was once built for war purposes, into a symbol of peace – a shared, creative, cultural and healing space.

The event will include an interactive talk on the origins of the hut by Joe Boden who was 10 when the American soldiers arrived to the airforce base in 1942. Joe will use maps of the Air Force base and memorabilia to engage the audience.

Local musicians led by artist, Colleen Savage, will entertain and help celebrate the hut as a cultural community hub.
