During European Heritage Week there will be an opportunity to enjoy and remember the rich history and heritage of Bessbrook.
Bessbrook grew up around the linen industry, and was named after its founder’s wife, Elizabeth (Bess) Nicholson and the river (brook) that runs through it. Many of the buildings in the model village are 19th Century listed buildings and part of a conservation area. On Saturday 9th September two guided walks will take place, during which local guide Rosemary will explain more about the buildings, as well as the industry and family that build the village. Walks will take place at 11am and 3pm, meeting at 6 College Square East. Booking is not required.
There will also be a chance to see inside a Millworkers House. Number 6 College Square East has been restored by Bessbrook Development Company, in the style of the late 1900’s. Come inside and experience what life was like in ‘The Model Village’. The Millworkers house will be open 11am until 3pm on Saturday 9th September.
