You are warmly invited to join the Conservation Volunteers and assist with the restoration of the Jonesborough Church of Ireland graveyard, next door to the Lanyon-Lynn building. Since the Church of Ireland sold the church building the graveyard has fallen into something of a no-man’s land and has not been maintained; as a result it had become badly over grown with ivy, brambles and nettles, so much so that many of the graves were hidden from view.
The graveyard is of historical significance to the area as it is the final resting place of a number of lords and ladies who had significant parts to play in the local history of the 1800s, such as Thomas Fortescue Baron Clermont, who was one of the more benevolent landlords during the Great Famine. The graveyard also has memorials to the poor souls who lost their lives in the Great Famine as well as fallen soldiers.
Volunteers began the work of restoring the graveyard in September and this work day will continue on their hard work. We’ll be working on the various graves, tidying up the ground around them and cleaning the head stones as well as using the chippings created from the previous work day.
All safety equipment and tools will be provided, if you’d like to participate, all you need to bring with you is weather appropriate clothing, sturdy footwear and a packed lunch. Hot drinks and biscuits will also be provided.
