Lúnasa Festival: Go Wild in the Ring of Gullion – Pond Dipping

Become a citizen scientist and explore what dwells beneath the surface of the Slieve Gullion ponds.

Join Dr. Gretta McGarron and the team to learn what dwells below the surface of Slieve Gullion’s ponds.  Become a citizen scientist and learn how to do pond dipping and other simple experiments to compare the health of two of the ponds on Slieve Gullion.

First we’ll look at what is living in the pond in Slieve Gullion courtyard, which until a few months ago was home to very hungry ducks.  Help us to find out how well the pond has recovered.

Second we’ll go up the forest drive to the dragon fly pond, further up the mountain.  During warm summer days the surface of the pond is alive with colourful dragon flies zooming to and fro.  What beasties will we find lurking below the surface in this wild and natural pond?

This activity is suitable for all ages, though children must be supervised by an adult at all times.

Meet at the Slieve Gullion Courtyard Pond.

Please note that you will need your own transport up the mountain to the dragon fly pond.
